2 more kashrut alerts from the BD
The kashrut division of the Union of Orthodox Synagogues sent out two late advisories on Friday afternoon about products that erroneously carry their world-famous diamond hechsher – but are, in fact, not kosher.

These are NOT KOSHER!
“Please be aware that ‘Bar One Ice Cream Sandwiches’ are NOT kosher,” says the Beth Din. While many Nestle products are kosher, this product does carry the hechsher but it is a mistake.
“We are working with the company to rectify this,” says the kashrut department, not indicating if that means getting the product kosher or getting the packaging changed.
The second kashrut alert relates to two products manufactured for Woolworths, which carry the Beth Din hechsher but are also not Kosher. They are:
- Ciliegia Mozzarella with Sun-dried Tomato & Basil 215g
- Ciliegia Mozzarella with Olives & Thyme 215g
Here, too, the kashrut alert simply says that “The manufacturer is taking corrective action to remedy the situation,” without saying if that means getting the product kosher or getting the packaging changed.

‘So many products mislabeled. How can we tell when the hechsher is reliable or not?’

‘While on holiday in Umhlanga recently we came across a fudge and chocolate ice cream by Dairy Maid that was kosher and it tastes very similar to Bar-One . A win- win situation .’

‘Dear Mr Editor, when they say “The manufacturer is taking corrective action to remedy the situation,” what they mean is that the manufacturer is waiting for clearance from head office to pay the invoice.
