Klerksdorp Yom Hashoah celebrates courage and resilience

The occasion also celebrated Jewish resilience, rebirth and survival, and remembered the courage of heroes like Irena Sendler, who in the 1940s, was head of the children’s section of Żegota, the Polish Council to Aid Jews, and was active in rescuing Jews, particularly by smuggling children out of the Warsaw Ghetto.
One of the younger community members read a quote from the diary of a holocaust victim. El Maleh Rachamim (the Prayer for the Departed) was recited, and national anthems were sung.
