Gourmet Kosher Food Fest starts Thursday

Husband and wife team Ari and Dorann Ben David are as involved in the Greenside community as one can be – he is President of the Shul while she runs the old hall which has been converted into an event facility called “The Greenside.”

“We came up with the idea together,” explains Dorann. Ari wants to promote the Shul and I am trying to advertise the venue.

They have enticed a large number of stall holders, she says, in fact they are fully subscribed. “But we could still squeeze some in if they want,” she admits.

The event runs from Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 August – with wildly varying times over the period. The Shul is situated at 7a, Chester Road, Greenside East. Although the event is much more than just about food – all the food will be under the supervision of the Johannesburg Beth Din.

ElAl have taken a stand and are running a four-day only ridiculous special offer – available from travel agents or directly from them.

There are a number of Jewish Artists showing their wares and buskers and all sorts of other entertainment – including special entertainment for children. Yom Tov gifts will be on sale, both cheese- and wine-tasting and sales, there is a braai area, a coffee shop, a hot beef on rye stall, and hot dogs – among the 55 participants,

Chalav Yisrael cheeses will be available and the meat on the braai will be Mehadren Commission.

The venue is “The Greenside” at Greenside Shul

The times will be: Thursday from 6 to 10pm; Friday from 9am to 3pm; Saturday from 7.30pm to late; and Sunday from 9am to late afternoon. Saturday and Sunday closing times will be dependent on the support.

This is going to be great family fun and each day will likely have as much of a different flavour as different hours.

The entrance fee is a mere R20 for adults and R10 for children, says Dorann. “KosherWorld will be giving vouchers that will allow customers to make online purchases at a R30 discount each time until Rosh Hashanah,” she says, “Kol Hakavod to them.” They have been absolutely marvellous, she says, and have embraced the event “with gusto!”
