Liron Mazor has a heart of gold
ANT KATZ
Liron did win, his name was selected by a random number generating programme, and he did share the prize. “What an amazing prize. Well done on putting it all together,” he had said on his entry. “Thanks for the opportunity to enter.”
The prize was an array of specialised and personalised family fitness products and services which will mainly be provided by 10 specialist sports scientists. The competition was held in association with 101.9 ChaiFM and a host of sponsors.

Everyone learned something from listening to the array of distinguished guest speakers:
- Benjy Porter, a director of the SA Jewish Report and a 100+ Marathon runner and multiple Iron Man finisher, thanked all the sponsors and competitors for their contributions;
- Zac van Heerden – sports scientist and, as owner of Exercise Solutions, the competition’s main sponsor, gave a fascinating talk on the importance of heart-rate monitoring in both preparation and competition for athletes;
- Mark Wolff of 32Gi – who is a nutritional supplement specialist whose products have become the in-thing for global track and field athletes, and also sponsor of the main speaker; and
- Main speaker Ludwick Mamabolo – the 2012 Comrades Marathon winner – who charmed one and all with his personal story and anecdotes.
Almost all the guests were enthralled to have some private time and have pictures taken with big-name speaker Ludwick Mamabolo.
Liron has a genuinely charitable heart
Liron Mazor entered the competition on October 29 and made the following statement: “What an amazing prize. Well done on putting it all together. Thanks for the opportunity to enter. My thoughts go out to Barbara Garnitz who could do with some additional support so this week’s entry I would like to share with her if we win. Shabbat Shalom.”
Barbara had posted her entry on October 22 and had said: “I would love to win this prize. I need to focus on my general health as I work all day and should be doing some form of physical exercise. Very stressful year, as I lost my husband in April and this would be wonderful for me to win this prize.”
It wasn’t a spontaneous moment of kindness, either. One of the guests at the prize-giving and who knows him personally said that “anyone who knows Liron will know that this is who he is.” And so it was that Liron divvied up the R22 000 worth of prizes with Barbara.
Liron and his family have taken the following prizes:
From “Exercise Solutions”:
- Founder and well-known sports scientist Zac van Heerden will do an initial heart rate zone and body composition test and follow-up assessment after six months;
- A functional movement body mechanics assessment and free starter pack core and stability training programme with Craig Lewis;
- Six-months of personalised coaching built on the assessment results and your goals with David Katz;
- An extended 90 minute session with functional sports nutritionist Ian Craig; and
A TomTom GPS training watch + heart rate monitor.
Barbara and her family’s spoils are:
- Up to six home-based personal physiotherapy sessions with specialist sports physiotherapist Aurelle Medalie;
- An in-store bike positional and power assessment and ride pack (8 x sessions) at CycleZone in Rosebank, Johannesburg;
- A voucher to the value of R1 000 to spend at South Africa’s leading running and sportswear store, the Sweat Shop Dunkeld Centre;
- A R1,000 hamper from one of the market leading sports nutrition suppliers,32Gi, a proudly Jewish South African company; and
- Home-based personal training with specialist in strength training, flexibility, ante- and post-natal training, Gabi Riesnik.
But that was just the big, bumper prize. SA Jewish Report and our media sponsor ChaiFM have, over the past four weeks, given away thousands of rands worth in prizes every Friday morning – as well as several thousand more at the prize-giving, including a state-of-the-art, pair of Swiss-made Sigvaris running or recovery compression socks; a voucher for a podiatric assessment and gait evaluation (on a treadmill) from Garyn Cohen; and yet another R500 hamper from 32Gi.
