Due to the advanced stage of ongoing renovations at KosherWorld Centre, the traditional lighting of Chabad’s Giant Menorah will go ahead on the new balcony and shine its beacon of light as it has for several years now. 

The big difference is that this year, on the newly-positioned balcony, the lights will be visible to many more people says Chabad’s Rabbi Michael Katz.

Jo’s Kitchen, Chabad and the KosherWorld Centre have agreed to co-sponsor the Great Chanukah Family Bash next Thursday – with free latkes, donuts, cake and other yummy treats.

The Giant Menorah will be lit daily – from Saturday December 24 to Saturday December 31, Saturday nights at 29:30 – and during the six other nights at 18:30 – and the community are welcome to attend.

However, says Lara, there will only be a single huge public event this year – on Thursday January 29, and members of the community can leave their wallets at home because it is all FREE!

The highlight of the family party will, of course, be the lighting of the Giant Menorah by Rabbi Michael Katz at 18:30.

After Rabbi Katz has completed his duties, the family fun and vibrant entertainment will start in earnest. “We will have great music, great food and fun for the kids. Face-painting, doughnut decorating and many more activities and prizes to be won,” says Lara. “Lots and lots of prizes,” she says for emphasis. “And lots and lots of fun!” This will set the scene for what she expects to be the biggest party of the year in the heart of the Johannesburg community.

Rabbi Katz told Jewish Report on Wednesday that Jody Becker from Jo’s Kitchen makes the best potato latkes he can remember tasting – and that is some recommendation. Party-goers will get them for free next Thursday evening.

Why is everything free? And how will it be the biggest party ever?

The Chanukah party organisers are expecting a large crowd, they say, as, firstly, everyone is curious to see what has been going on with the renovations to KosherWorld Centre; and secondly, because everything at the party will be for free.

“Add to that the opportunity to hear the wise words on Chanukah from Rabbi Katz” say the party hosts, and they believe that they have the perfect recipe. “And now we have all the space we need, and all under cover, to host such a great Chanukah party,” says Rosenthal.
