After 60 years still going strong
Our parents, Ronnie and Leigh Levy, last week Friday, celebrated a special milestone in their lives: 60 years of marriage.
LAUREN KIER
Ronnie (born and raised in Bloemfontein) and Leigh (born and raised in Johannesburg) met in 1956 at a house party and dated for exactly three weekends. On the fourth weekend, Ronnie had made up his mind that Leigh was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He proposed to her and they were married on February 17, 1957.
They lived in Bloemfontein until 1973 when Ronnie – in business – was transferred to Durban. In 1982 they relocated to Johannesburg.
Ronnie has a zest for life, is full of fun with a wonderful sense of humour. He is sociable and loves shopping. He keeps himself occupied by watching TV (particularly sport), socialising, shopping and playing his weekly poker game.
Leigh is quiet, softly spoken, cooks and still hosts many Shabbat dinners and Yomteivim.
Together Ronnie and Leigh have raised four daughters – hands-on parents in every area of their children’s lives.
The family has been extended by three sons-in-law, seven grandchildren, three granddaughters-in-law and a brand-new great-granddaughter.
Ronnie says: “May many more couples know and experience the love and happiness that the two of us have shared.”
Their secret to a happy and long marriage? “Respect each other, understand each other and communicate. Lots of laughter and of course a bit of luck.”
