Keeping the community informed on recent developments Shalom subscribers,
By far the “hottest” news of the week is the ongoing saga of the elusive Shuvu Banim Breslov Rabbi, Eliezer Berland, who is avoiding extradition to Israel. SAPS were unable to find him during a raid last month. An alleged death threat on Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein by his followers resulted! The threat has since been withdrawn but the SA Jewish community is calling for his return to Israel to face the music. Read all about it! The other Israeli wanted in Israel for complicity in murder and numerous further charges is purported Israeli mob boss, Shai Musli, who appeared before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on January 18 and was granted bail of R100 000. Israeli officials have been hunting the world for him too. Recently-ordained Rabbi Lila Kagedan has stirred up international controversy after adopting the title of rabbi. She is slated to be joining the ‘spiritual leadership team’ of an Orthodox congregation in New Jersey. Read what Orthodox women in SA say about this. Four South Africans: Denis Goldberg, Ahmed Kathrada, George Bizos and Joel, Lord Joffe, were recently awarded the Freedom of the City of London at a ceremony in Guildhall’s prestigious Livery Hall. Goldberg had the audience at his feet with his reminiscences and also a gentle reprimand to his old ANC movement. For Diaspora Jewry, identifying with Israel has become a matter of showing solidarity in times of trouble and defending it, but the flipside is Israel’s many extraordinary achievements and the sheer richness and excitement of living in a thriving, multicultural Jewish state, says Avi Mayer, renowned social media spokesman, who was visiting South Africa last week. The Israeli government’s passage of legislation that authorises egalitarian prayer in a soon-to-be-created section adjacent to the southern part of the Kotel, has been called groundbreaking and empowering, but there are many from more Orthodox movements who are unhappy with this Cabinet decision. The US election is hotting up with former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s announcement that he might throw his hat in the ring as an independent candidate. Media mogul Bloomberg is prepared to put in $1 billion of his own money and will make his final decision in March. |
