The honour of having written the single most-read story on Jewish Report Online in 2015 goes to editor Vanessa Valkin whose story on Philip Krawitz receiving the prestigious Yakir award from Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal in Jerusalem, was published on June 24, 2015 and has had a whopping 11 736 reads to date.
ANT KATZ
Krawitz had been one of just four recipients to be thus recognised at Keren Hayesod’s 2015 Annual World Conference, the other three hailing from Hong Kong, Brazil and Switzerland.
Referring to Krawitz as “The Cape Town Jewish community’s unofficial mayor”, Valkin told how, in his acceptance speech, Krawitz told the audience, which included Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, how, as a boy, his father had shown him photographs of refugee ships passing through Cape Town harbour, filled with Jews who were unable to find sanctuary in any port, in any country.

Krawitz was thrilled to have his wife Michele as well as two of his daughters at the ceremony with him. One of his daughters lives in Israel. Former South African winners include: Stanley Seeff, Russel Gaddin, Robert Kaplan, Mervyn Horwitz and Geoffrey Herman.
He is chairman of the board of the United Jewish Campaign, which raises funds for both local and Israeli causes; he is a trustee of the South African Holocaust and Genocide Foundation as well as the CSO and is a protector of the Trust of Ikamva Labantu. He has also been the recipient of the SA Jewish Report’s “Lifetime Achiever Award”.

Get the best out of JR Online
During the December/January holidays last year we were overrun by enquiries from non-regular users of the website about how to find things on SAJR Online. Well, the good news is that each and every one of the almost 15 000 content items posted on the website over the past 26 months are still there! And they will remain available and searchable on the Internet forever.
And so, we are going to also run a twice-weekly segment entitled “Getting the best out of JR Online” which we will start posting from next week. They will eventually be put together for posterity as a manual for users to follow.
As a sweetener, allow us to introduce you to three useful pages (which we will explain how to access in the “Getting the best…” series):
- Click here to see our VIDEO ARCHIVES which you can search through at your leisure;
- Click here to see our LATEST STORIES which go back 26 months in order of recency; and
