SA Jewish Report Online has posted almost 50 stories on the unique relationship between SA Jewry & Madiba. We’ve followed community-related events since the tragic news of his passing last week & brought you every significant event in close to real time. And we are just getting started – so we have compiled all the favourite reads under this single umbrella & will constantly update it for you. User response has been literally amazing. Locals and Jews, like everyone else all over the world, are looking to find ways to relate to Nelson Mandela – and www.sajr.co.za is the place to find it. On several days this week the website has had more users from America and Israel than from South Africa. And, given the thousands of hits we’re getting from SA, that tells us you want more of it. So, users, sit back and enjoy, you aint seen nothing yet!

Tomorrow and Thursday we will be bringing you stories on:

  • Two wonderful books;
  • Why ex-Ambassador Alon Liel says it’s a pity Israel didn’t listen to Madiba;
  • Mandela and the Jews by David Saks;
  • JR editor Geoff Sifrin’s account of the Memorial Day
  • Some hilarious memories of the early years from Howard Sackstein;
  • The bar mitzvah lad who invited Madiba & nearly platzed when he arrived; and
  • Many, many more Jewish Mandela moments.

    I believe that the aftermath of this episode (the life and death of Nelson Mandela) will determine the true loyalty of S.African Jews. Will it be to a S.Africa after Mandela, or to the only God given state of Eretz Yisrael.

    By the extensive praise by our Rabbinate and press of Mandela and his legacy it seems to me that most Jews in S.Africa are making Eretz Yisrael merely a peripheral issue in their lives. This overwhelming praise of Mandela is turning away the attention of so many Jews to the fact that no matter how comfortable they might be in S.Africa, they are scorning the greatest gift of love that Hashem has given to His people – THE LAND OF ISRAEL.

    Mandela might have been a great leader for S.Afrcans, but Jews should know that no matter how great their leaders were or are at present they are living in a Land that they do not belong to.

    I feel that Torah leaders should be teaching our young people to free themselves, as Mandela did, from the \”occupation\” of exile. Teach them that only in Eretz Yisrael can they have true Zionism – living in the Land of the Torah.
