Betar-SA will be holding a week-long winter camp which they have dubbed “Machaneh Hatchalah Chadasha” (or “New Beginnings”) in Port Edward in KZN – and they most appropriately chose to launch it at the Yom Ha’atzmaut youth event at Gold Reef City on Tuesday.

“We have a beautiful venue for our winter camp site,” Hadley Shapirio, Rosh Machaneh Choref, told Jewish Report this week. And, says Hadley: “Everyone’s invited.”

Nikki Giessing, Betar-SA’s national chair (Rosh Hanagah) says that Betar has rented an entire campsite, Teen Ranch in Port Edward, KZN, and will be providing 100 percent kosher catering under the Beth Din, with security provided by CSO and 24-hour on-site trained medical assistance provided by Medi Response.

Pictured, left to right are the 2013 Betar committee (offices): Kevin Klempman – (Sgan Rosh Machaneh – Camps); Hadley Sharpiro – (Co-Rosh Machaneh Choref – Winter Camp); Malcolm Sher – (Gizbar – Treasurer); Nikki Giessing – (Rosh Hanahah – National Chair); Greg Feigin – (Rosh Israel); and Marc Lifschitz – (Co-Rosh Machaneh Choref)

“The winter camp will run from 6 – 13 July and all Jewish youth from grade three up are invited to attend. There are no strings attached,” says Hadley..

“As a Jewish and Zionistic movement we cater to all,” explains Nikki. There will be a resident Rabbi and daily Shiurim will be available – but attendance will not be compulsory.

Betar have done their best to make the winter camp affordable by offering an all-inclusive cost of R1950 per chanich. Their comprehensive package includes transport from Joburg on luxury coaches, accommodation, meals, all activities, etc. “The price has been kept as low as possible,” explains Nikki, “but there are still parents who can’t afford to send their children. We are looking for sponsors to assist,” she says, as Betar doesn’t want to have to turn anyone away any child for financial reasons.

Readers who would like further details should contact Rosh Macheneh Choref (Winter Camp) Hadley Sharpiro 072 590-2726 or Rosh Hanagah Nikki Giessing, at 072 457-2853 or send an e-mail to info@betarsa.co.za

“The Betar team take safety as their number one priority and all water activities will be supervised and include life guards,” says Hadley.

Needless to say, boys and girls will stay separately and the Maddies will ensure it stays that way.

What purpose does this camp serve? These young people should put all their efforts in becoming true Zionists – those who love the Land of Israel, and have full intention of living there. Without this message, I believe that these camps can only help to perpetuate the exilic living that now exists.

I’m sure the great Ze’ev Jabotinsky zl would have put the spirit of Aliyah into the minds of these young people.

‘Shalom Israeli, the purpose of our camps are to do exactly what you say.

We aim to educate the Southen African Jewish youth on Ze’ev Jabotinsky’s zl ideologies of Hadar and Tagar with the ultimate goal of Aliyah, while doing so in a positive and fun environment.

Our intentions are to instill and nurture a love for Eretz Yisrael in the hearts and minds of the youth.

We also have a keen focus on hasbarah and we are active in Pro-Zionist events in the community.

    Tel Hai.’
