Bidcorp ORT’S Second Chance makes dreams come true
Bidcorp-ORT South Africa’s Second Chance project is yielding exceptional results. This year-long maths and science programme helps post-matric students achieve improved results for entry into tertiary institutions. Beneficiaries of the programme are hopeful about their future – a far cry from where they were a year ago. Here’s why: the pass rate of the class of 2017 in their maths and physical science rewrite was an incredible 92.5%, with an increase also in the quality of passes. Nine students improved their maths mark by more than 80%, as did 10 science students, with four of them improving their marks in both subjects by 80% and more.
After improving her maths result from 51% to 73%, Nhlamulo Chauke has begun studying towards a Medical Sciences degree at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (formerly Medunsa) in Pretoria North, Gauteng. And, armed with his improved maths mark of 70%, Bekokuhle Hlophe is now studying towards a Chemical Engineering degree at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Tshepang Mampane, a resident of Alexandra in Gauteng, and a graduate of Second Chance, nurses ambitions of becoming a pilot. His improved mark, from 47% to 60%, will stand him in good stead to achieve his career goal. He says: “I joined the Bidcorp-ORT SA programme to upgrade my maths and science marks to enable me to qualify for the minimum entry requirements stipulated by the SA Civil Aviation Authority. Bidcorp-ORT SA has given me a second chance to make a better future for myself in aspects beyond academics. The project has changed my life; it made me love maths and gave me hope. I can do anything with a positive mindset.”
