Celebrating numeracy and literacy at Orange Grove School

Not all kids find literacy and numeracy easy to pick up, so The Link at Orange Grove Primary School (OG) ensures that as many Grade 2s as possible at the school that need help, get it. That way, improved literacy becoming a reality for the kids.

The Link organised am end-of-year party party for all the grade 2s. The theme was “Everyone is special”. Each pupil received a party pack and a new book and they enjoyed a story reading session. The school hall floor vibrated from lots of dancing and singing.

In appreciation, OG presented each Link volunteer with a gorgeous scarf.

The Link has 11 centres – including Orange Grove School – and is growing. Each session with a child is 45 minutes, with the first 15 being paired reading, the middle 15 is to practice handwriting and literacy games and the volunteer reads to the child for the last 15 minutes. This enables the child to get one-on-one attention and consolidate reading skills, giving them a good foundation.

The organisation can only help as many grade 2s as there are volunteers, so if you would like to be a part of this project, contact Mickie Mayer at Mickiemayer@gmail.com or Robynne Abrahams (082) 651-7921.
