Chief Rabbi in the trenches and on stage

The Chief Rabbi once again spoke out to Power last week. Rabbi Warren Goldstein was at the forefront of the #ZumaMustFall march in Pretoria, both on the ground and in a rabble-rousing short interlude on the stage, SEE VIDEO, outside the Union Buildings to the delight of protesters of all persuasions. This follows almost a year to the day after Goldstein had been one of the first senior leaders in SA to tell the ANC that President Zuma had “lost the moral legitimacy to govern this country.” SEE NEW VIDEO AND PICS, and themed his Pesach message on the topic.

In delivering his Pesach message, “Let our people go!” – Rabbi Goldstein drew the analogy of the saga of today’s South Africa to the exodus of our people from Egypt 3 329 years ago. But, insisted the Chief Rabbi, “with that freedom comes a voice”.

Once again Rabbi Goldstein was at the forefront of the marches for change in South Africa over the past week. Exactly a year ago the Chief Rabbi publicly told the ANC hierarchy that President Jacob Zuma had “lost the moral legitimacy to govern this country.”

He had been speaking in April 2016 after a meeting of interfaith bodies representing upwards of 80 per cent of South Africans – who had gathered to discuss between themselves, and then with four of the top-six ANC officials – the implications after the Nkandla decision in the Constitutional Court. Not mincing his words, Rabbi Goldstein told the ANC to ask Zuma to step down and, as he put it a year ago, “put the good of the country before anything else”.

As old as the article maybe but, reading now in 2022 my memories of the Zuma catastrophe makes my heart rate goes up as if it’s happening today. The ANC couldn’t stop this man, however I need to put it this way that, some of the ANC members were enjoying and benefiting in this chaos which is why the few members who were condemning this were making less impact.
