Nelson Mandela: 1918 to… forever!

Jewish Report

SA Jewish Report Online has posted over 50 tributary items on the unique relationship between SA Jewry and Madiba. We’ve followed community-related events since the tragic news of his passing last week & brought you every significant event in close to real time.

SAJR Online has provided individuals & families, organisations & businesses an opportunity to place tributes to Madiba: SEE: ALL TRIBUTES & STORIES

These sponsored tributes cost just a few hundred rand each and will continue to run on the website forever as a mark of respect. For further details on placing your own tribute, send an e-mail to online.editor@sajr.co.za and we’ll get back to you!

In the midst of all these tributes to our \”beloved\” Nelson Mandela, let us not forget that here was a man who gave moral and physical (embraces and kisses) support to the biggest killer of Jews since Hitler. I refer  to the praise Mandela passed on to Yasser Arafat , at the time of his death, as the greatest freedom fighter of his generation. Yes, a \”freedom fighter\” who oversaw the horrendous murder and maiming of over 5000 Jewish men women and children.

How can any Jewish person describe Mandela as beloved under these circumstances?

    Hello Anon,

While we welcome your criticism as this is a platform open to all opinions, and while we respect your right to post anonymously, had this anonymous comment been criticising anyone but the Jewish Report itself, it would have been edited or deleted on moderation.

However, as a matter of principle the SA Jewish Report has always published any critique of itself in full.

Having said that, as the online editor I would feel remiss if I failed to respond with a number of questions to you:

    ·         Why do you choose to make this statement anonymously?

    ·         Why did you elect to make this statement on a tribute of the JR?

    ·         Every major Jewish org, secular & religious, in SA and abroad, has paid tribute to Madiba – over 60 appear on this website alone – is there a reason you have chosen this particular tribute to comment on?

You can see all of the Madiba content by clicking the special “MANDELA” tab on the main search bar on any page of the website.

“How can any Jewish person describe Mandela as beloved?” you ask.

Because the man was both beloved by SA and world Jewry, and because he loved and respected Jewish people, surely that in itself is enough of an explanation?

Rabin embraced Arafat. Peres wrote a wonderful eulogy and tribute to Madiba. Israelis a close (if somewhat closeted) ally of Jordan and at peace with Egypt. Israel and the PA are partners (unlike Hamas).

Mandela embraced De Klerk whose regime had terrorised, killed and tortured thousands of South Africans (including Jews, by the way) for 45 years. Mandela befriended people, organisations and countries which had a hand in propping up the Apartheid regime.

Obama shook the hand of Castro last week. Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar/Burma embraced her imprisoners a few years back.

So, how can Jewish people describe Mandela as beloved?

The answer is simple. Because he is beloved to Jews. Was Arafat? Of course not.

But Madiba is altogether another question.
