Guilty Wits students get merely slap on a wrist

Professor Adam Habib, vice-chancellor of Wits, in a newspaper article and in a radio interview, made many valid points especially when related to the quality of leadership in South Africa. How ironic, however, coming from a man who could seemingly not enforce a ruling he made last year. This was in respect of Mohammed Desai of BDS-SA, members of the Wits Student Representative Council and Muslim students who forcibly disrupted a musical recital by an Israeli pianist at Wits, threw an elderly lady to the floor and who caused destruction of university property.

After almost a year of investigation and disciplinary meetings the miscreants were sentenced to community service “of a nature to be determined”. The students involved treated his ruling with contempt and virtually laughed in his face. I doubt that any of them did even a minute of community service

Did he employ his leadership qualities in allowing these students to totally disregard him without recourse as far as I am currently aware?

This is a magnificent exhibition of leadership.

    ‘The reason for universities in this country going backwards and not maintaining standards is that {CUT! Nat, I really must insist that you e-mail me so I can tell you what you can’t say, and why not  -ED online.editor@sajr.co.za}
    \nthe standard at Rhodes also has dropped. Bear in mind that {CUT!  -ED} in my opinion are found severely wanting.’
