Jewish singles club’s Newtown ‘graffiti’ walk
The Joburg Jewish Activities Club (JJAC), a social club for Jewish singles and dating couples, aged 30–55, are doing a Graffiti Walking tour of Newtown on Sunday 12 July. JJAC is a social club for Jewish singles and dating couples which was started last year by 39-year-old Sheli Berger. “Anybody can come as long as you’re not married,” Sheli told Jewish Report this week. They also have weekly get-togethers at Sandton Shul.

The above video was taken at one of JJAC’s weekly fun nights at Sandton Shul. They play table tennis, pool, Pictionary, 30 Seconds, Scrabble and lots more!
But Sunday’s walk it isn’t just about graffiti – they’ll also visit sculptures and fascinating architecture. “We have a very experienced guide who will walk us through all the nooks and crannies of Newtown to show us these hidden treasures,” club founder Sheli Berger told Jewish Report this week.
“We will also have a top Graffiti artist join us to tell us about his life as a Graffiti artist.”
The tour will meet at Sci-Bono Coffee Shop, Miriam Makeba Street, Newtown (across from the SAB World of Beer) at 09h45 and end at noon. The cost is R200 per person and pre-booking is essential. To reserve, make payment to Nedbank account 1970799064, Sandton City Retail, branch number 197005. The name of the account holder is Sheli Berger and as a reference use “Your Name – Graffiti Tour” and then email proof to ilovejjac@gmail.com with ‘Graffiti Tour’ in the subject line, including your full name and cell number.
To-date, Sheli has attracted over 75 to her events. “Because its interest-driven,” she explains, different events attract different numbers. “We usually have between 20 and 30 at an event, its cosy and chilled – the magic is that one can really relax,” she says.
The group did a similar graffiti tour last year, says Sheli, “and were absolutely gobsmacked by what we experienced! We all felt like we had disappeared into a whole new world we never knew existed and left really inspired! Don’t miss this very unique opportunity to join us again,” she says.
The JJAC also meets every Thursday at 18h30 in the Youth Centre of the Sandton Shul for a games night. They usually have 20 to 30 people and a great deal of fun – all for a cover fee of just R25.
