KD Ariel kids celebrate Outdoor Classroom Day
Schools around South Africa celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day last Thursday. This is a global campaign to encourage outdoor learning and play. Thousands of schools worldwide take lessons outdoors and prioritise playtime on this day. In 2017, over 2.3 million children worldwide took part.
Outdoor learning improves children’s health, engages them in learning and leads to a greater connection with nature.
At King David Ariel, the day started off with a mindfulness activity as pupils used their five senses to observe the environment. After brain break (a short interval between classes to allow learners the chance to refocus and energise before the next lesson), the Grade 3s presented a lovely poem about climbing trees.
Grade 1, 2 and 3 pupils from Victory Park Primary joined the Ariel kids for an obstacle course and a sensory play session on the playground. This was a great way for the children to socialise and have fun while learning. Hebrew lessons and some literacy and numeracy activities also took place outdoors.
