KDVP – ‘Cultivate’ stimulates young budding artists

King David Victory Park Primary recently hosted a week-long theme of art and cultural activities called “Cultivate”. A number of exciting activities and outings were organised for the learners such as a visit and tour of the FNB Johannesburg Art Fair; a workshop with world famous Israeli artist Hanoch Piven; collaborative lessons between the art departments of the high and primary school, including string art and marbelling; an interactive engagement with Artist Proof Studio (APS) where pupils were given the unique opportunity to create their own masterpiece while enjoying a paper collage workshop on famous South African icons. 

To ensure that parents could also find value from the “Cultivate” week, the school organised a fun informative parent outing to Artist Proof Studio. 

Kim Berman, executive director of the studio, gave parents a brief presentation on an introduction to printmaking techniques. This was followed by a walkabout by the learners and a display of their work in process.

A special opportunity of the evening was when parents were able to witness the printing of a large 20 plate etching by William Kentridge, which will be on exhibition at the Johannesburg Art Fair.

Everyone who attended enjoyed the evening and the exposure to young talented artists and learnt a lot about print-making. The week came to an exhilarating end with the grade 7s visiting the FNB Art Fair at the Sandton Convention Centre.
