He was elected unopposed at a special meeting of the National Executive Council of the SAJBD on Tuesday.

Kuming, who heads up the specialised finance debt division at Investec Bank, had contributed to other areas of communal life. He is the vice-chairperson of the Gauteng Council of the SAJBD, has served on the Pine Street Shul committee, and has been involved with the Community Security Organisation (CSO) and the SA Jewish Board of Education (SABJE).

“David further sits on the investment committee that advises the SAJBD on the investment strategies for funds that it administers,” according to a statement released by the SAJBD on Wednesday.

Kuming steps into this position, taking over from the board’s national chairperson, Shaun Zagnoev, who has been holding both voluntary positions temporarily for the last six months.

Former treasurer Eric Marx’ stepping down was part of an agreement with the board’s Cape Council and community members, who had questioned his actions over elections when he had been chair of the Cape Board.

This led to an independent review panel chaired by advocate Milton Seligson.

Zagnoev this week expressed his appreciation to Marx for his “many years of dedicated service”.

He said: “As national treasurer, Eric played a crucial role in addressing various pressing issues relating to good governance in such areas as the administration of trust funds and of effective channels of communication in the area of financial management.”

Zagnoev wished Kuming success in his new role, adding that he was confident that his experience and knowledge would be a great asset to the SAJBD.

Kuming was not available for comment.
