Collins writes: “As a child I lived in ‘Villa Beatrix’, Wisbeach Road, facing the back of Winchester Mansions, Sea Point, where I and my sister used to climb a tree in the front garden. One day, to great excitement, we found ‘treasure’ hidden in a fork of the branches.

“This ‘treasure’ consisted of three medals. My mother reported the find to the police but nothing happened.”

Collins says that after his mother’s death, the medals reappeared in a brown envelope addressed to him (Keith).

“I have always felt that they should be returned to the family and now, as we mark the centenary of the Great War, I am particularly keen that I make every effort to do so.”
