The De Beers English Olympiad is an annual English competition that draws around 8 000 entries from high schools throughout South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique. This prestigious competition has run since 1976 and is organised jointly by the Grahamstown Foundation and the South African Council for English Education (SACEE).
It has been sponsored by De Beers since 1985. The 2014 competition was written in March, but the rank order was announced at a glamorous prize-giving ceremony on July 17, during the National Schools Festival in Grahamstown.
Sam has won a cash prize of R25 000 as well as the National Olympiad Trophy. His brother, Saul, came second in the same competition in 2012.
