Exercise Solutions’ founder, Zac van Heerden, says that “holistic coaching programmes are designed to provide you with support in all the key areas of performance and preparation”.
These, he says, include: assessment and measurement; development of sport-specific strength and function; prescription of correct training methods; personal goal setting; evaluation of one’s personal performance; and recovery and regeneration from high-intensity training and competition.
Exercise Solutions is an independent sports science company along the lines of the Sports Science Institute in Cape Town and HPC in Pretoria. Zac has an MSc in medicine, specialising in exercise and environmental physiology.

He was the physiologist/conditioning coach for Mamelodi Sundowns FC before leaving to pursue his own business interests fulltime last year. “Mamelodi Sundowns wishes to thank Zac for the role he played in getting the team into shape in our quest for honours. We are grateful to him for his contribution and wish him well,” Sundowns’ head of technical, Mike Ntombela, said on the club’s official website on June 25, 2014.
Van Heerden has worked with a number of local professional teams over the years, including Bidvest Wits, Moroka Swallows and Platinum Stars.
He was the fitness coach for Bafana Bafana from 2011 to 2013 and physiologist for the Portuguese nationalfFootball team during World Cup 2010, working with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo. Zac has worked with numerous professional rugby and cricket players and teams, as well as Olympic and Paralympic athletes. He works with amateur athletes and sports enthusiasts at all levels across a multitude of disciplines to help them achieve peak levels of performance safely and effectively.
Zac has proven inspirational in helping ordinary people achieve the extraordinary. He and his team of specialists will help to motivate our winning family to take their health, fitness and sport to new heights.

ZAC VAN HEERDEN is an exercise physiologist – MSc (Med) (Exercise Physiology) (Wits) and specialises in the assessment and physiological analysis.
His a key area in maximising performance.
Zac focuses on the development of effective assessment routines, and integration of the results in a holistic training methodology.
This incorporates diverse influences such as specialised nutrition, functional strength and stability and high-level periodisation to ensure peak performance on race day.
Zac has worked with high-level professional athletes and international performers across a wide range of sports and activities, including professional soccer, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, and mountaineering expeditions.
CRAIG LEWIS is a specialist in Movement Mechanics and has a BA (Hons) (Sports Science) (RAU). He also heads up the Strength and Conditioning at a Private Sports Medicine Centre in Morningside.
Craig is also the strength and conditioning coach for SuperSport United Football Club and previously did the same work for Mpumalanga Black Aces.

DAVID KATZ is a specialist running coach. He has a Masters’ degree in Media Studies specialising in sports journalism and has worked as both a journalist and TV producer in South African sports media for close on 10 years.
His real passion, however, is health and fitness. David “Mr Active” Katz has been broadcasting his “Mr Active” segment on Saturday mornings on Radio 702 and Cape Talk for over three years.
Earlier this year David left SuperSport after eight years with the country’s premier sports channel to continue to share his passion for, and growing his knowledge of, running and cycling and has expanded his coaching of runners.
He has been running for over 10 years most recently adding trail running to his road repertoire. Discovering heart rate-based training has taken his personal running and coaching skills to the next level, says David.
IAN CRAIG is a specialist consultant in Functional Nutrition – MSc (Ex Phys) BSc DipCNE (Nut Ther). In layman’s terms, he is an exercise physiologist, nutritional therapist, NLP practitioner and an endurance coach. He was a competitive middle-distance runner for 20 years and is now a more leisurely runner and cyclist. Ian specialises in Functional Sports Nutrition, a fast evolving discipline that considers both health and performance of an athlete from an integrative health perspective. He is also the editor of the UK magazines Functional Sports Nutrition and Total Sports Performance, leads the Middlesex University Personalised Sports Nutrition postgraduate course and the new Functional Sports Nutrition Academy. In South Africa, he is a consultant for genetics company DNAlysis Biotechnology and runs a private exercise and nutrition practice at Morningside Sports Medicine in Johannesburg for Exercise Solutions.
