Parents/kids transform Soweto pre-school

By: RENNETTE ULLMAN

We had a marvellous trip to Soweto last Sunday. I have been a teacher at King David Linksfield Pre-primary School for the past 42 years and will retire in December.

For the last 20 years I have been involved with the Outreach Programme run by the SA Jewish Board of Education.

The Gauteng Baobab Early Learning Training programme strives to develop child-minders and caregivers of young children by giving them a deeper insight into the development and needs of young children. We work with practitioners in Alexandra, Tembisa and Soweto.

Instead of having the traditional “retirement tea”, I opted to assist a pre-school started by one of our practitioners in Soweto East. I invited the parents and children from the school and about 50 people travelled to the venue by school bus while another eight travelled there by car.

We had invited the parents and children of the Soweto pre-school to join us in painting and plastering their school.

We provided all the children with activities to keep them busy and one of our moms took charge of transforming a barren, rock strewn cement wasteland into the most amazing garden which the parents and children planted with vegetable seeds.

We painted a bright red hop-scotch for the children outside their classroom and we played street soccer with the children and adults outside.

We had face painters who delighted all the children with their wonderful art.

The parents donated the paint, plaster, tables, chairs, mattresses for sleeping and the most unbelievable amount of toys and books. They are truly an example of what it means to give tzedakah.

My cousin Lisette Datnow, decided to celebrate her birthday by joining me in this wonderful event.
