The Second Innings School Project, a project of Chevrah Kadisha Social Services, has been reaching out to learners for the past 17 years assisting primary school children between Grades 1 and 5 in developing literacy and language skills.

During the 2013 school year, 75 volunteers assisted over 1,100 learners from previously disadvantaged communities with English literacy, in the following 12 primary schools:

  • Orange Grove
  • Glenhazel
  • Lyndhurst
  • Bramley
  • Saxonwold
  • Houghton
  • Parkhurst
  • Johannesburg Preparatory
  • Jeppe Preparatory
  • Johannesburg Hospital School (at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital)
  • Cyrildene
  • Kensington Ridge Primary School

The aim of the Project is to recruit volunteers who can assist with literacy skills development and language enrichment of primary school children. In addition to language development, enhancing reading, vocabulary and comprehension skills – the volunteers form valuable relationships with the children providing love, support and individual attention, which encourage improved development in every sphere, including numeracy, life skills, confidence and self-esteem.

No formal teaching qualifications are required, but the importance of this volunteer work cannot be underestimated as it also provides a stable, consistent and secure relationship for the children. Training is offered to prepare volunteers for the programme.

This programme of the Joburg Chev is always in need of additional volunteers for the schools and is currently recruiting people for participation in this very meaningful and beneficial project.
